Susannah Website
1.How did you get into music?
My family is very musical and my Mum in particular encouraged me as a small child to sing and listen to all types of music.
2.What were your major influences?
Growing up I listened to so many different styles. My parents had a cassette of Whitney Houston and I thought she was amazing! I also loved stage musicals like Grease and Phantom of the Opera. Now as an adult I am more influenced by songs that tell a story and are more understated and real. I love Shawn Colvin, Gavin DeGraw, Dave Matthews...the list goes on!
3. Were you happy with responses to your music on the web?
Absolutely. I have an awesome website and MySpace has made it possible for so many more people to hear my music.
4. What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Definitely my time spent in Nashville. I have had great moments in professional musicals around the world but living in Nashville was such a great learning experience. I really found out what being creative and original is all about. I love it over there!
5. Have you evolved as an artist since the last two releases?
I always knew I could write songs but since the last couple of Cd's I have learn 't how to open my mind to different ways of saying things. My music is so much more organic and from the heart now which I am so proud of.
6. What inspires you when writing music?
My life, my family's life and simply watching the world. I also love co-writing which always changes the dynamic of a song idea. Melodies drive me crazy in a great way...I could sing all day.
7. Have you had much interest from Aussie labels?
To be honest I haven't approached any yet.
8. What are your thoughts on file sharing and the mp3 format?
I like the mp3 format as it enables me to post songs on my website/ MySpace easily, email song ideas to co-writers/producers quickly and anyway someone likes you music they will almost always want a higher quality source than mp3. That almost answers the file sharing part of the question too, I think file sharing is good at a production/education level and as long as it is not infringing any copyright (and in turn royalty) schemes, great, share away.
9. Who would most like to record a song with?
If we are talking a well known artist I would say Keith Urban. He is a really amazing musician and performer and I love his music. Being a fellow Aussie helps too!!
10. Do you think the Internet is good for helping artists get known?
Yes. It has been so instrumental in so many people's careers. I do sometimes wish we could go back when it was all about the pen and paper...I'm not a computer person!!
11. Have you had much response from overseas labels?
There again I have not approached any or been 'miraculously discovered' but this year I have plans to embark on that conquest.
12. Your thoughts on talent shows like Australian Idol?
They used to bother me but now I think 'good on them'. The people who run them make a killing and the unknown artists get to sing and make music...isn't that what it is all about? At the end of the day shows like Idol are keeping the younger generations talking about music, singing and then in turn they are buying singles and Cd's so in that way I think it is healthy for the industry.
13. Has MySpace helped with your music?
It has helped me as I am able to post new songs and keep the 'ball rolling' so to speak. Someone is always looking and listening at my MySpace whether it is another artist or music lovers..MySpace is a great idea.
14. Why go to American to write music?
I found when I spent time in Nashville I was continuously inspired by other musicians and songwriters. There are so many great people over there and I was lucky enough to have some great contacts in Australia that put me in touch with the right people for me. They also had a very professional attitude which is very refreshing.
17. Have you tried your luck overseas with your music yet?
I have been writing in America and have done some recordings over there which have gone down very well. I believe it is simply a matter of continually learning and working hard...eventually someone will notice!
18. Any plans to tour across Australia?
Not at the moment, would love to though.
19. What is next for Susannah Stone?
Well I'm on my way back to Nashville and can't wait for my next endeavor over there. I have written some cracker songs while I have been back in Australia and I'm looking forward to putting all the pieces of the puzzle together. I will be recording, song writing and basically making it all happen!!
