1.How did you get into music?

I come from a musical family. From as early as age two, I can remember putting on little performances in front of our home video camera. My uncles and grandpa played guitar and at family gatherings we would get together and sing songs. I guess I just never knew anything different. Then in high school, I started pouring my thought out in writing. It wasn't until about a year ago I started singing at places in the Tampa area and things really started picking up for me.

2. What were your major influences?

Some of my major influences include my Uncle Mark (who got me excited about learning to play the guitar), my older sister Kelly (who was an Opera singer in college), and all of the recording artists that I have listened to over the years. My music often is a reflection of the music that I like. Specifically: Lauryn Hills lyrics and tone, Joss Stones style, Pinks ruggedness and attitude, and Princes funk. Add in a little bit of Alicia Keys and youve got Jenny Flory's influences.

3. If you could have a three band bill who would they be?

Wow, I dont know. Do they have to be alive currently? I think I would choose Jack Johnson, The Fugees, and Nat King Cole.

4. Any plans to record some new music?

I'm currently working on some material in the recording studio at my university. I just have to save up some money so I can continue to record after I graduate.

5. What inspires you when writing music?

Sadness mostly. When there is something I feel strongly about, music is my outlet. Sometimes atmosphere inspires me. Sitting down by the bay with my guitar I feel very introspective. It seems as though I am able to analyze myself better when I sit back and relax by myself.

6. What made you want to go out and play music?

I will sing for anyone who will listen. I used to play at a pier and many times there would be only two or three people there, but I would come every weekend, I don't care how many people are there, I love sharing my passion.

7. What are your thoughts on file sharing and the mp3 format?

The mp3 format has allowed me to get my music out to a lot of people. I am truly thankful for MySpace because it has opened up numerous opportunities for me, and allowed people all around the United States to hear my music. Piracy is always an issue when it comes to file sharing, but I don't know that there is much that can be done about it right now. People will find a way to get the music they want. In a way, it's flattering, but on the other hand it would be more flattering if that person were willing to pay for it.

8. Who would you most like to record a song with?

I would be thrilled to record with Alicia Keys or Joss Stone.

9. What bands/artists are you listening to lately?

I am hooked on John Legend, and Gavin DeGraw. I haven't really bought anything new in a while. I just have a thing for musicians that play their own instruments.

10. Who has helped you out the most?

My friends and family have showered me with support. That has probably been the most helpful of all. I also am very grateful to Byron Sellers who helped me produce a couple of songs that are on my MySpace page.

11. What has the response been to your music on the web?

Everyone has been so encouraging.

12. What are some of your favourite movies?

Ha Ha! Well, this is a hard question due to the fact that I am a film major. For me it's like choosing a favorite kid. Im just a fan of all movies. Rather than naming a bunch of film studies movies I will talk about the mainstream ones that I really like and that have inspired me. City of God and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind are two that I love visually. I love Singing in the Rain, White Christmas. Then there are the ones everyone can relate to: The Godfather, Fight Club, Finding Nemo, and Zoolander, I'm a huge fan of Ben Stiller.

13. What have you seen recently you really enjoyed?

I haven't seen anything that really stands out in my mind. The most recent movie I've seen is Lucky Number Slevin. I really liked the editing and set design, but I wasn't crazy about the storyline.

14. What is next for Jenny Flory?

Im graduating from the University of Tampa on May 6th with a double major Film and Communication. Then I return to Columbus, Ohio where I plan to start singing wherever I can. I've been feeling around to see if anyone is interested in playing with me when I get back. I would prefer to build up a fan base before breaking out with an album. I just started playing publicly less than a year ago. Everything has been happening so quickly and it is a very exciting time in my life. I am very happy that I get to share my music with the world.

Thanks for the interview xoxo Jenny Flory
